The project goal is to build the GRID infrastructure for high performance computing in medicine in order to encourage the future development of application and some initial applications for immediate usage. Oncology and oncological surgery are the first beneficiaries of this facility and the existing applications are useful for them (please, find details on Application section). Gradually, as other medical specialities will become interested we hope that the number of existing resident applications will increase.
This applications intend to solve quickly problems that otherwise will need weeks of regular computing to complete. As our users do not have a significant level of knowledge in HPC/GRID but have a clear understanding of the medical process behind the application we provide them with a simple interface to use to introduce the data and to get the result. This interface also check the data sets from each user for the level of used resources and reject those cases where this level is too high (e.g. very large number of iterations of a complex algorithm, huge amount of manipulated data, etc.). For this cases a special request should be raised with the site administrators (please, see the GRID usage chapter into the Documents section).
On the figure below you can find the existing operational infrastructure.

We have right now 208 cores dedicated for performance computing controlled by a gLite 3.2 middleware and an external connection of 100Mbps via Romanian NREN, RoEduNet. As the traffic will increase the available bandwidth will increase also to 1Gbps.
Into the Documents section in addition to the set of scientific documents related with HPC/GRID application to medicine and medical literature useful for medical professionals education you will find documentation about how to join the VO and how to run the resident applications.
The registered users can open a trouble ticket with us using the HelpDesk menu after authentication procedure.
Any use of grid computing resources by an individual member or group of members under the auspices of MedGRID, that is not explicitly covered by the numbered points below, is unacceptable and is considered a violation of the policy:
- simulation activities;
- data analysis activities;
- data management activities.
All users requesting services of the Open Science Grid must abide by a common set of basic rules. This rules compose the Acceptable Use Policy (comply with EGEE GRID AUP version 4.2):
- You shall only use the Grid to perform work, or transmit or store data consistent with the stated goals, policies and conditions of use as defined by the body or bodies granting you access.
- You shall not use the Grid for any unlawful purpose and not (attempt to) breach or circumvent any Grid administrative or security controls.
- You shall respect intellectual property and confidentiality agreements.
- You shall protect your access credentials (e.g. private keys or passwords).
- You shall immediately report any known or suspected security breach or misuse of the Grid or access credentials to the incident reporting locations specified by the Grid and to the relevant credential issuing authorities.
- You must notify the Registrar of any changes to your Registration Information.
- Use of the Grid is a t your own risk. There is no guarantee that the Grid will be available at any time or that it will suit any purpose.
- Logged information, including information provided by you for registration purposes, is used for administrative, operational, accounting, monitoring and security purposes only. This information may be di sclosed, via secured mechanisms, only for the same purposes and only as far as necessary to other organisations cooperating with the Grid. Although efforts are made to maintain confidentiality, no guarantees are given.
- The access-granting bodies and Resource Providers are entitled to regulate, suspend or terminate your access, within their domain of authority, and you shall immediately comply with their instructions.
- . You are liable for the consequences of you violating any of these conditions of use.
You are liable for the consequences of any violation by you of these conditions. Your membership and affiliation may be terminate as a result of any violation
MedGRID keeps records of registration and logging data for purposes of administration, operation, accounting and security. You agree, where such agreement is required, to the collection of this information and its use for the stated purposes.
In order to have access to applications or if you want to develop and run your own application you have to enrol with MedGRID VO. As other VOs will become available you may join them or, if are a member of anyone of them you automatically get access to the system. The first step is to drop a mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will guide you through the process. These steps are also documented in the GRID documents section. Before anything else you have to fill in the questionnaire used by EGI Life Science Virtual Research Community (full text can be find at http://wiki.healthgrid.org/LSVRC:BiomedQuestionnaire) and send it by mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
